MISSION AND HISTORY

Our mission is to provide educational, social, and compassionate assistance to girls in the Hout Bay area. We aim specifically to offer genuine opportunities to previously disadvantaged girls, ensuring appropriate and professional back-up to help them succeed in their academic and personal lives.

Sistahood has been active since 2010 and registered as an official NPO (130-035) in November 2013. Imizamo Yethu is a township in Hout Bay, Cape Town with a high number of teenage pregnancy, high school dropouts, drug and alcohol abuse, lack of positive role models and resources for girls. Young girls turn to drugs to numb their pain and suffering, some turn to prostitution to put food on the table adding to the teenage pregnancies and school dropouts. These girls have no hope and see no way out of their circumstances. They lack positive role models to inspire and motivate them to be more than what they are. The lack of positive role models leaves room for negative influence that perpetuates the prevalent community challenges. That's where Sistahood can step in and help.

  • Youth participation: focused through peer education, debating, educational support, motivational speakers, international exposure via our volunteers, health awareness, pregnancy prevention, self-defence, & gender work

  • Community responsiveness: through community outreach and partnership

  • Knowledge repository: using data to prove our results and impact

  • Accountability: a facility member is always available

  • Safe & nuturing environment: where members can be themselves, have a voice, and showcase their talents
